DOWN TO EARTH

Ever had that satisfying moment when a messy set of books suddenly makes perfect sense? You spot the one duplicated invoice everyone else missed, fix the categorisation that was throwing out the GST, run a quick reconciliation, and the trial balance snaps into zero like it was waiting for you. That quiet win – turning chaos into clarity – is what keeps experienced bookkeepers coming back to the screen day after day. And if you are the kind of person who gets a kick out of that feeling (and you are based anywhere in New Zealand with fast internet), there is currently a really interesting remote opportunity open.

DOWN TO EARTH Business & Finance Hub is a fully remote Australian bookkeeping firm run by a Kiwi founder. They look after a solid portfolio of Australian clients with clean, streamlined systems, and right now, the founder, Leann,e is looking for a Senior Bookkeeper to help oversee the team and provide quality assurance checks. This is a contractor role (not PAYE) paying $35–$40 per hour, starting with 1–2 days a week,ek and the genuine potential to grow into more hours as trust builds. It is 100% work-from-home, flexible, and part of a small, warm team that values efficiency and a positive “can-do” attitude over rigid hierarchy. No office politics, no commute, just focused bookkeeping work where your experience and attention to detail directly lift the quality of client work. If you have 5–10 years of solid senior bookkeeping behind you, excellent Xero and MYOB skills, and very strong Excel/Google Sheets knowledge, this could be the low-stress, high-trust remote role that finally lets you work the way you actually want to work.

Who This Senior Bookkeeper Role Is Really For

This is not an entry-level or mid-weight position – Leanne is looking for someone who has already “been around the block” and can step in as a trusted second set of eyes.

The right person will have:

  • 5–10 years of proven senior bookkeeping or similar experience (the more complex the clients, the better)
  • Very strong Xero and MYOB skills – you can navigate both platforms quickly and confidently
  • Advanced Excel / Google Sheets ability – formulas, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, Pivot Tables, data validationand , conditional formatting, you use these tools daily without thinking twice.
  • Fast typing speed and excellent attention to detail – numbers need to be spot-onthe  first time
  • A quick-learning mindset and genuine desire to keep growing
  • A positive, collaborative attitude – you enjoy working with a small team and giving constructive feedback
  • Your own reliable laptop/PC and excellent internet speed (this is non-negotiable for remote work)

Australian taxation knowledge is not required upfront – Leanne will personally guide you through the differences between AU and NZ rules. What she really wants is someone who can hit the ground running in Xero/MYOB, spot issues quickly, and help raise the overall quality bar for the whole team.

What Your Week Would Look Like (Starting Small)

This role begins part-time (1–2 days/week), so you can ease in while still keeping other commitments.

Typical tasks include:

  • Performing quality assurance checks on client books prepared by the team
  • Reviewing reconciliations, categorisations, GST/BAS prep, and other compliance items
  • Providing constructive feedback and coaching to junior bookkeepers
  • Helping troubleshoot more complex client queries or unusual transactions
  • Running ad-hoc reports, spotting trends, and suggesting process improvements
  • Occasionally jumping in to handle overflow work during busy periods

Because the business is streamlined and cloud-based, you can work from anywhere with good internet. Leanne is very clear that this is a contractor arrangement – you invoice monthly, manage your own tax, and set your own hours within the agreed days.

Why This Remote Senior Bookkeeper Role Feels Different

Most remote bookkeeping gigs either pay by the hour with no growth path or demand full-time availability. This one sits in a nice middle ground.

Here is what stands out:

  • $35–$40 per hour (very competitive for part-time remote senior work)
  • Truly flexible start – 1–2 days per week with real potential to scale up
  • 100% remote – no commute, no office politics, work from wherever you are most productive
  • Warm, friendly team environment – small group, no micromanaging
  • Direct mentorship from the founder (Leanne will personally teach you Australian tax rules)
  • Opportunity to help shape and improve systems as the business grows
  • The quiet satisfaction of knowing your QA checks and coaching directly improve client outcomes
  • A role that values experience and efficiency over rigid office hours

People in similar remote senior positions often stay for years because the pay is good, the work is meaningful, and the flexibility lets them balance life while still feeling valued.
